Sydney Newborn Photographer | Top Ten Things I love about being a Newborn Photographer

In this blog post, I share with you my top 10 things that I love about being a Sydney Newborn Photographer.

1. I love babies (I really do!)

I really do love everything about newborn babies.  My husband and I used to joke that as our littlest one approached 12 months, I would be sad that the “baby” stage was over and start hinting about having another!  Being a newborn photographer is perfect for me – I get to cuddle and gush over newborn babies …. and then they go home at the end of the session!

2. I love matching colours

One of my favourite parts of a newborn session is playing with all of the colours and matching the fabrics, wraps, outfits and headbands. It is a bit like playing dress-up as a child!

3. I love being able to show mums that they are beautiful

As a new mother, you have just gone through the most amazing journey – carrying your baby for 9 months and bringing them into this world. I love capturing the bond between a mother and their newborn baby and showing the mother just how beautiful they are. One day this baby will be able to look back on the photos that I captured and see what their mum looked like when they were born and how much she loved them.

4. I get to imagine what life has in store for this little person

I am so lucky to meet this tiny little person right at the beginning of their life journey. I get to wonder and imagine about all the wonderful things this baby has in-store for them and the life they will lead. It is a magical moment full of wonder, hope and promise.

5. Newborns cannot run away!

It may take awhile for a newborn to fall asleep, but at least they cannot run away! I chase after my own 4 children every day, so it is nice to know that the ’subject’ cannot move!

6. I love doing something with my life that makes other people happy

It is an amazing feeling to have a career that provides other people with a gift that they will treasure and that makes them so happy. Having a new baby is such an emotional event and having your baby captured beautifully in images is super special.

7. I have made life-time friends

Through my photography career, I have been so lucky to have made amazing friends – I can see our friendship continuing as we grow old and wrinkly together (LOL!).

8. It is about being patient, gentle and precise – the small details matter

Newborn photography is all about being patient, slow and gentle. Sometimes it takes 40 minutes before a baby is settled and sleepy and I can actually pick up my camera and start shooting.  Every image is perfectly composed, with attention paid to make sure their tiny little fingers are showing and that their head is angled properly to the light. I love perfecting all of the tiny little details.

9. There is just so much love and joy

No matter how tired and overwhelmed new parents may be, there is an aura of love and joy that surrounds them. As a newborn photographer,  I am so privileged to be able to share in this love and joy with these families  – it makes for such a perfect work-day!

10.  I love being part of the awesome newborn photography community that is worldwide.

Newborn photography is growing in popularity around the world.  The industry is now brimming full with workshops, forums, chatrooms, Facebook groups and online lectures through programs such as CreativeLive. Dedicated to newborn and baby portraiture is the International Association of Newborn Photography and the US National Association of Professional Child Photography – I am a member of both.  I am also a Professional Mentor in the forum Learn Shoot Inspire, an online forum for mentoring and support of other photographers.  I love being able to participate in this amazing international community.

Sydney Newborn Photographer | Baby Lachlan

As a busy Sydney Newborn Photographer, I see so many babies come through my studio – while each and every baby is gorgeous and amazing, occasionally I form a stronger attachment to some of them (and secretly want to keep them forever!).  I felt just this way about baby Rhett, when he came to see me in early 2012 for his newborn photography session. I spent so much of that session snuggling and soothing him and he was just divine.  I was then super excited to have Rhett and his new baby brother, Lachlan, return to my studio almost two years later.  The family resemblance is very strong and little Lachlan is one handsome baby boy!  He breezed through his session, totally relaxed and chilled out.  His mum and I laughed so hard at how curled and “squished” he liked to be.  I am also totally thrilled that Rhett, who was just shy of the age of two, was willing to give Lachlan a little kiss on his head and smile for the camera – so that mum and dad have some images of their boys together.  I absolutely love to incorporate special requests made by parents – in this case, Lachlan’s parents asked for two special shots; one of Lachlan in a hammock (as this would be his ‘feature’ shot which they will enlarge for their wall art) and also a shot of Dad in his martial arts attire (we also did this set-up when Rhett was a baby). I know that these images are extra special to this family.  I really and truly appreciate families that return for further photography sessions – I pour my heart into every session to give families photographs that they will love and treasure and always hope that they will select me again, as their family grows, as their Sydney Newborn Photographer.

If you love the little woolen hat and pants set, this is available from Little Noggins (totally love all of her knitted items!).

Sydney baby and family photographer | Scarlet and Aliya

I love when families return to my studio for another ‘updated’ photo session – it warms my heart to know that I am their baby and family photographer.  This is a small sneak peek from this session (as a I know how excited they are to see the images!).  It always amazes me how fast kids grow – I cannot believe how big Scarlet is now!  She is the most adorable, cheeky, loveable little girl. I would absolutely recognise her from her baby photographs – she has just gotten bigger, but still has the same infectious smile.  Her little sister, Aliya is a bit quieter with the most beautiful soul and gorgeous big blue eyes.  My job as a leading Sydney baby and family photographer is to capture the personalities of each family member and the love and bond they share – this family made my job so easy! You can tell how much love and laughter they share. We captured so many amazing images that it was hard to decide on just a few images for this sneak peek!  I totally love this family and look forward to photographing them as they grow.

Rebecca Connolly Photography has a limited number of spots reserved for family sessions for babies aged 6 months – 12 months (and their family members) – if you would like more information about these sessions, or would like to make a booking, please use the contact form on the website – we would love to hear from you!

I have received messages from other photographers asking where I source my gorgeous rugs and fabric backdrops: – this amazing peach flokati rug is from Drops & Props and the dusty pink lace fabric is from Roses and Ruffles.

Sydney Newborn Photographer | Baby Chloe

I was super excited when Chloe’s mum called to book me as her newborn photographer – she told me that this was her third baby and her first baby girl.  Immediately, I knew that this session needed to be special and super girly.  It was decided that this session would just be for Chloe and her mum – the whole family are returning when Chloe is  a little bit older for a full family shoot.  Apart from having  amazingly flawless skin and beautiful hair, Chloe was super relaxed and content through the whole session. We selected soft girly colours like yellow, pink and creams, which matched Chloe perfectly.  It is easy to see where Chloe got her gorgeous features from …. her mum is simply gorgeous. Make sure you scroll to the bottom of this post to see the images of these two stunning girls together. I am so happy that Chloe’s mum ordered some of these images as super large Mounted Wall Arts to hang around her house, as well as all the digital files and an album – it just makes my heart sing to know that my work is up on display.  I am so very thankful that Chloe’s mum selected me to capture images of her newborn baby girl – it was a privilege to be a part of this moment – but also, I feel like I have gained a new friend.

I would love to give credit to the amazing vendors that make some of the gorgeous outfits and headbands that Chloe wore during the session, make sure you check out their sites: Veronika G, Peachy Poppet Designs, Love that Prop and Knitz.

Sydney Newborn Photographer | Family History

This post is a personal one about my own family history as captured by photography.  Over the last few weeks my mother has been searching for family photos to add to the book she is putting together for my grandmother about her life.  She discovered a box full of hidden treasures – the wedding portraits of my grandparents, my great-grandparents and my great-great-grandparents.  These original photographs, dating back to 1906, are in fantastic condition.  It is so amazing that, so many generations later, I am able to look at these photos that captured the magical wedding day of my ancestors. Look at the fashion – I absolutely love the style of the 1920s!! I have sat here and studied these photos – the dresses, the accessories, the styling and posing; I have looked for family resemblances and have been able to show the photos to my own children – passing down the heritage.

This discovery is a huge reminder to me of the value of photographs – not only how important it is to have photos taken, but also how important it is to print them out.  Because my ancestors hired a photographer and then somebody in my family decided to print these images and carefully store them, they have been passed down from generation to generation.  I never got to meet my great-great-grandparents and my memories of most of my great-grandparents is hazy – but these images have given me a glimpse into my past and the people that have helped shaped the course of my own life – and for that reason, these photographs will forever be treasured.
