North Sydney Newborn Photography| What to Wear??

One of the first questions asked by clients that have booked their newborn session (or family or maternity session) with North Sydney Newborn Photography is: “What do we wear?”. I did not fully appreciate how selecting the “right” clothes could be nerve-racking, until I had my own newborn photography session. You know that having everyone dressed “right” can make a huge difference to the ‘look’ of the images. To assist clients, I send out Information Sheets prior to their photography session. However, I have found that visual aids are so much better at explaining clothing advice, then providing clients with a text document. So I have been working on putting together some style guides on “What to Wear” by creating specific Pinterest boards. Newborn Sessions – What to Wear Pinterest Board

For newborn sessions, I love neutrals. I prefer the cream and white tones (because I use a beige coloured background) – but black can also work. Recently, I have been drawn to soft coloured tones, not just the white/beige colours and you can see that I have “pinned” some of these colour tones in images on the Pinterest board. I advise my clients that there are two important things to remember: (1) make sure you are all wearing similar tones – so either all light or all dark tones; and (2) it is best if tops are short sleeves or tank tops, because we need to see the parent’s arms holding the baby. I have also included some ideas for siblings clothes – in particular, I have “pinned” some Australian vendors. Something that may be helpful, I have pinned some “Not Good” tops, to show what does not work well in a newborn photography session.

North Sydney Newborn Photographer |Newborn and Family Photos Baby Christian

As a leading North Sydney newborn photographer, I love being able to capture growing families – the sibling shots are the most important part of the session. These are the images that I know that I particularly wanted when I had my last baby. So when I was told that baby Christian’s two big brothers were coming along, I knew that we needed to make time to get these images. It is so interesting working with kids to see their different personalities. My aim is to try to capture their personalities in my images – and if you scroll down to the last few images in this blog post, you will see how well their personalities shine through! These three brothers are going to have the most amazing bond and I can already tell that they are going to be little monkeys playing a ton of ‘tricks’ certain to make their mother’s hair turn grey! For his newborn photographs, Christian was just perfect. I think he has been here before – he has a sort of ‘mature’ look – like he knows exactly what is going on. And for his images with his mother – he just looked straight at me and gave that big grin! I am so thrilled to have captured that amazing moment in time for this lovely family. The family photos are such an important part of all of my newborn photography sessions. North Sydney Newborn Photographer | Baby Ivana

After a short one week Christmas family holiday, I arrived back in North Sydney and walked straight back into the studio to take Baby Ivana’s newborn photographs. Her parents warned me that she was fiesty and that they had not been getting much sleep. But I could totally forgive Ivana, given how absolutely gorgeous she is! I found that Ivana was happy to sleep and be posed – she just did not want to sleep for very long in any one pose. That was totally ok – she was just telling me that that she wanted to try out lots of different colours and outfits! Lucky for her – I had selected some hats and headbands from two of my favourite vendors Knitz and Peachy Poppet Designs. If you are starting out as a newborn photographer, then you should definitely go and check out these two stores.

One of the most common question that I get from parents that inquire with me about hiring me as their newborn photographer, is “what if my baby does not sleep”. I always reassure them that I am extremely patient and that we have all day – I can outlast them and eventually all babies will fall asleep and then we can get their gorgeous newborn photographs taken. Every baby is different, and some, like baby Ivana, only sleep for a few moments at a time. Baby Ivana made me work hard during the session, but it was worth it and now her family have beautiful images of her that captures her baby newness! North Sydney Newborn Photographer |Twins Alfie and Jimmy

In January this year, I took newborn photos for these amazing twin boys. Little twins Alfie and Jimmy arrived just in time for their first Christmas – a few weeks earlier than expected. After a number of weeks in special care, I received the exiting email from their mum letting me know that she would be bringing her boys home. Only two days after they were discharged from hospital, Alfie and Jimmy came to visit me for their newborn photography session. These two boys are identical twins and impossible to tell apart. Mum painted one of the boys toe nails so that we would be able to keep track of who was who, given we decided to snip off their hospital ID bands. After a brief awake time at the beginning of the photo session, both babies then slept the entire time. We did a range of individual shots and ones of the boys together. They were so happy being snuggled together and were very calm and peaceful! With their perfect skin and blonde hair – these two are going to be heart-breakers. I can only imagine the fun and mischief they are going to get up to as they grow up – not to mention the pranks they will be able to play by switching identities!

There is something very special about twins and I love capturing the special bond between these babies. It is amazing to witness the closeness that twins share and also the emergence of different personalities. I feel very honoured to have been selected as this family’s newborn photographer. I know that these photos will forever be treasured as the boys grow up. I hope you enjoy browsing the newborn photos of little Alfie and Jimmy!

North Sydney Newborn Photographer | Family Photo Day

A few times throughout the year, I hold a Family Photo Day in my studio on a Saturday. I am so excited to see all of the grown-up babies return to visit me – it is amazing how fast they grow. I really love these sessions and capturing all of the amazing expressions that these kids make. These sessions are always popular and spots fill up really quickly – I wish that I could hold them more often. Here is a sample of images from my last 2013 family photography day.
