Sydney Newborn Photography | Bespoke Moments

North Sydney Newborn Photography is excited to introduce a new blog series spotlighting local businesses that parents of young kids may find interesting.

For this blog post, we chatted with Jess from Bespoke Moments, a small design business that creates customised prints for all of life’s milestones.  The custom prints by Bespoke Moments have been featured on a range of television shows and in magazines, including on Better Homes and Gardens and in the ‘Pregnancy Magazine’. At the Wedding Industry Expert Awards for both 2013 and 2014, Bespoke Moments won the category of  ‘Most Popular Wedding Accessories – Australia’,  ‘Most Popular Wedding Accessories – NSW’ and ‘Most Popular Wedding Accessories – Sydney.  I met Jess when she brought her first baby to my home studio for a newborn photography session. I just recently photographed her second baby as well.  I am excited to share with you this fantastic small business – read on below to find out some more information about Bespoke Moments!

  • What inspired you to start Bespoke Moments?

I started the business in 2012 when my daughter Evie was about four months old. I created my first birth prints for my niece and daughter. From there, family and friends said how much they loved them and it sort of grew through word of mouth. I have always been a creative and busy person. I left behind an exciting marketing and content career in the music and video game industry and Bespoke Moments is the perfect outlet for combining creativity, technology, design and keeping me busy.

  • Do you have a favourite product in your store at the moment?

I am expanding into wedding stationery which is lots of fun. I have done several wedding invitation suites now and I really enjoy working with couples to deliver their vision with gorgeous designs on beautiful cardstock. I will however always have a soft spot for the baby birth prints. I love how they capture a little person so perfectly. People feel good about giving such a personalised and unique gift, and new parents adore seeing their child’s details in one hand crafted piece. I still love seeing my kids’ birth prints when I go into their rooms.

  • I love your first year prints – tell us a bit about these.

These are very popular of late. They are basically a snapshot of a child’s first year. On one design you can see their important milestones, weight, height, the things they love most, how many teeth they have, words they can say and much more. Many parents order these as a beautiful keepsake and use it as a table centre piece display at the child’s first birthday party.

Now for some fun questions about you:

Favourite colour? Hmmm I have always said blue, but really, I think yellow.

Day or Night? Night. The best time to relax or design while little people sleep.

Favourite food? I have thought about this answer for far too long and can’t decide. So I will say anything apart from seafood.

Mountains or Beach? Beach

Book or Movie? Book

An interesting or quirky fact about you that others may not know about …… I have danced on stage at The Sydney Opera House several times.

Sydney Newborn Photographer | Professional Photography Awards 2014

Sydney Newborn Photographer:  Silver Award in the Australian Institute of Professional Photography National Awards 2014;  Silver Award in the Australian Institute of Professional Photography NSW Awards 2014

Once  a year the Australian photography community gather for the awards hosted by the Australian  Institute of Professional Photography – the Australian Professional Photography Awards (APPA).  Each State branch of the AIPP also holds State-level photographic awards.  I wanted to share with you my experience.  I was very excited that this year, both the State and the National Awards included a new sub-category for “Babies and Maternity” within the overall ‘Family’ category at the Awards – this is amazing recognition of the growth in the niche newborn photography industry in Australia and the importance of being a specialist in this type of photography. Through running my specialised Sydney Newborn Photography Studio over the last number of years,  I have witnessed the explosion in the popularity of newborn photography, the value the community places on newborn photographs (huge thank you to my amazing clients) and the fantastic talent around the country. That said, the APPA is a top-level competition and judging is tough with prints judged by a panel of experienced professional photographers.

This year I entered both the NSW State and the National Professional Photography Awards. I am so glad that I entered both award competitions – it was a last minute decision to enter the Nationals (I had to rush around like crazy to get my prints ready in time).  There is something very nerve-racking about placing your images out there to be judged. As a newborn photographer, I pour my soul into my work and am so humbled to have my work recognised.  I am thrilled to have received a silver award at both the State Awards and the National Awards for 2014.  My award prints are below.

Huge congratulations to all of the winners in 2014 (and also to those that entered amazing prints and came soooo close).

Sydney Newborn Photographer | Baby Ollie

Being a Sydney newborn photographer can be a humbling experience particularly when you form a special bond with one of your returning clients. I am particularly grateful to have the support of this beautiful family who again travelled quite a distance to have their new baby son, Ollie, photographed by me. I really appreciate their recommendations to other clients and their positive feedback. I was again able to celebrate their new arrival by capturing the love this family has for each other and the parent’s pride in their three sons. Little Ollie arrived just in time for Christmas and was a dream to photograph. There is no better gift than a new family member for Christmas.  Ollie didn’t even blink at the attention he was being given and already seemed accustomed to his two big brothers. A sentimental moment came when I was able to take a similar photo that I took with Deeks in 2012 as Nate  kissed his new baby brother. It was wonderful to see how Deeks had grown and he too was happy to pose with his new brother. I love the cute shot of Ollie in the bear hat and of course you cannot go past a little boy lying on a baby mint/blue background. But I think the highlight of the day was the family shot, as the whole family’s happiness shone in their smiling faces as they look forward to a bright future.

You can see some more images from Deeks session in 2012 at the end of this post and also by clicking HERE:

Sydney Maternity Photographer | Sharon

Being a Sydney Maternity Photographer is a privilege, as I have the chance to witness the growth of new life and the joy of the mother-to-be.  I try to select the style that suits each individual woman, consulting with them on their preferences. I was honoured to photograph this beautiful mother-to-be.   Sharon’s pregnancy was very special as she had tried for quite a while for this much loved first baby. I captured Sharon’s anticipation as she waited for the birth of her first child in the classical pose that showcases her natural beauty. This beautiful portrait, in which Sharon is wearing a gorgeous apricot dress, is one moment in time that can be displayed as a work of art for all to see. Sharon’s excitement and love for her unborn child is also photographed in the artistic style by using the texture of the fabric that is draped across her.  I decided to become even more creative by wrapping Sharon in a clear tulle to give the textured, effect of a painting. I love the close up body shots in a maternity session where the physical bond between mother and baby can be seen and remembered. The black and white contrast images show this wonderful stage of life in timeless portraits.

For some ideas about what to wear for your maternity session, I have put together an inspiration board on pinterest with links to different vendors supplying maternity outfits:  PINTEREST MATERNITY BOARD

Sydney Newborn Photographer | Baby Johnny

As a Sydney newborn photographer, I was able to use the beautiful summer weather to offer Johnny’s parents an outdoor shot as an add on to the studio session. This is something I offer during the warmer months as we can take advantage of our fantastic outdoors.  I was really excited when a cute little wooden wagon arrived just in time for Johnny’s session and it suited the garden setting perfectly. Johnny actually smiled when I put him in it and he looked so comfortable and cosy. It seemed as if they were made for each other! It is amazing to think that in just 12 months time Johnny will be standing and will be able to pull the wagon along himself – they just grow up so incredibly fast. I loved Johnny’s gorgeous, long black hair and cheeky face and the bond between him and his dad was already obvious. One of my favourite shots is when a new mother cradles her child in her arms and you can see the love that shines in her face. I also love the close shots of the newborn baby’s hands and fingers.  I enjoy watching all first time parents and these parents were so obviously proud of their new son and were super excited about the chance to capture their love for him in timeless photographs.

I love sharing where I shop for all of my props – the little blue knit pants are from Make with Love, the gorgeous maroon blanket is from Love that Prop and the incredible wooden wagon is from Drops and Props.
